Village Life - A Buddhist Temple Photo and Text by Siri
A very large percentage of the village folks are Buddhists, and therefore the village Buddhist temple plays a very significant role in every day life. Once a week, on "poya days", (four quarters of the moon, full moon days are the holiest) it is a gathering place for everybody, very similar to the local churches in the western culture. It is quite a sight to see streams of white clad devotees making their way to local ‘vihare" (shrine) in the evening carrying trays of fresh flowers as offerings to the "triple gems" (Buddha, Dhamma (the teachings) and Sangha, the deciples) in Buddhism.
