Village Life - Home

The folks who live in hill country villages are the true Sri Lankans in many ways. They are unspoilt, unpretentious, generous and honest to a fault. Most of them are small farmers, growing rice, the staple in the Sri Lankan diet, and vegetables for daily use. Few cash crops like, cloves, tamarind, lemons and limes are grown by a few, but not on a commercial scale. Cows are a common sight in the villages for milk, mostly for that essential "cup o' tea" and water buffalo for milk and working in the fields. Homes are simple, adobe and wood structures, with straw, coconut palm leaf, steel sheet, or local clay tiles covering the roof.
