Membership: Open to vegetarians, irrespective of kind, and vegans. One can obtain life membership or annually renewable membership. Persons who support the vegetarian ideals of compassion to all beings and recognize the social/ ecological importance of a cruelty-free diet and hope to become vegetarian in the future, are welcome as associate members.
How to become a member: By submitting a membership application form, along with the requisite membership fee.
Funds: The Society mainly operates on contributions from well-wishers and the modest income derived from the nominal membership fees (see constitution) and proceeds from the sale of its publications. New applicants for membership are requested to consider supplementing the formal membership fee with a donation of their choice.
Activities: SLVS initiates and participates in activities designed to promote its mission. It has been producing, since 1997, a bi-annual news magazine titled Mituru Lova, which carries articles and news features in Sinhala and English. It also publishes leaflets, mostly in Sinhala and a few in English. It has been holding public meetings, seminars at places of Buddhist worship and workshops for school children and vegetarian cooking demonstrations. It also takes part, on a modest scale, in the activities and protest campaigns of the growing animal welfare/ animal rights movement of Sri Lanka, and promotes the ideal of ecological responsibility in its seminars and workshops.
