M3 Bo-Bo 180 x 2 Locally assembled, experimental "Jayanthi" class. Engines and transmissions from scrapped Silver S1 series, centre cab and two equal length hoods containing an English Electric 180 BHP 6 cylinder engine each, blue and silver livery, assembled in 1956
M4 Co-Co 1750 Canadian Montreal Locomotive Works, Alco-Bombardier V12 powered, blue and silver livery, imported 1975
M5 Bo-Bo 1640 Japanese, Hitachi, MTU derived Ikegai V12 powered, green and red livery, imported 1979 now some repowered, refer M5a and M5b.
M5a Bo-Bo 1150 Re-engined locally with MTU V12, sporting pink and pastel green livery, extensive modifications to bodywork and styling done at Ratmalana in 1991.
M5b Bo-Bo 1150 Re-engined locally with Paxman V12, green and red livery, few modifications to bodywork and styling done at Ratmalana in 1997.
M6 A1A-A1A 1650 West German, Henschel-Thyssen, GM 645  V12 powered, green and red livery, red and yellow for Inter City locos only, imported 1979

M8 Co-Co 2600 Indian, Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, ALCO based V16 powered, blue and silver livery, introduced 1996, 8 locos in service. Most powerful loco in Sri Lanka.

Co-Co 1800 French, Alsthom, Ruston 12 cylinder powerplant, blue, yellow and white livery, imported in October 2000.
Mention must be made of two Armstrong Whitworth 2-6-2 Diesel Electric locos lent for trials in 1933/4. The engine was a 800 HP Armstrong-Sulzer. These units were re-exported in the 1930's
