HOLD PC ELECTIONS (99 Feb 03)
The Supreme Court on Thursday the twenty eighth of January said in a judgment that the president has no power to postpone elections under the emergency regulations. The President had postponed elections to five provincial councils including western and sabaragamuwa using emergency regulations. The Supreme courtv also orders that the elections to these five provincial councils should be held within three months.
The Supreme Court made it clear that even though the president is immune to the law, her acts are not immune. Thus the president's powers have been curtailed by the supreme court decision and the officers who carry out wrong executive orders will not enjoy immunity as the president.
With the widespread demand to cancel the elections recently held to the Vayamba provincial council the government is going through the last stages in its term and very soon we will be watching very influential people in the PA government joining the UNP.
