PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTIONS POSTPONED (98 Aug 05)
As expected the government on Tuesday the fourth declared a state of emergency in the entire country and postponed the Provincial Elections scheduled for August 28th. It is understood that some of the political parties will challenge the postponement before the supreme court.
The postponement came at the insistence of Mr. Anuruddha Ratwatte. From the very beginning he maintained that it would be impossible to conduct the elections due to security reasons.
As we have argued in Abolish the Provincial Councils, a previous feature article, there should be a campaign to abolish the Provincial Councils, which serve no purpose. They are a white elephant and there is no reason why they should be maintained.
