A megalithic graveyard had been discovered by the archaeologists of the Central Cultural Fund during the ongoing excavation in the Ihala Kalawella Ulpatha Forest Reserve.
This site was discovered in the thick forest on Mayaulpotha Road off Digampathana, located on the Dambulla-Habarana main road. Officials of the Central Cultural Fund had begun excavation work after a preliminary examination of the area in which archaeologists discovered 28 megalithic graves, ash containers, earthenware, and beads of different sizes and colours.
Excavations Officer Sumithra Basnayaka said that the megalithic tombs in the Kalawella Ulpotha area were considered to be even older than the Ibbankatuwa graveyard found recently. The location of the grave yard was described as being about five kilometres inside the forest reserve. A team of research officers belonging to the Sigiriya Project including Sumitra Basnayake and K.N. Karunaratne were carrying out excavation work on the ruins on the instructions of the Director, Archaeology of the Sigiriya Project and Senior Lecturer of Archaeology of the Peradeniya University Dr. D.K. Jayaratne together with the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund Prof. Nimal de Silva. They are hopeful that the items discovered would lay bare a host of information on ancient human habitats. Source: Daily Mirror - Sri Lanka
