Once ready, lacquers of various colors are applied, in bands as shown here, or in free hand patterns, depending on the ability of the craftsman. Once the lacquer is applied, it is heated and polished, using a part of a tempered palm leaf, to a high gloss. During this process different colors of hot lacquer blend into each other creating interesting patterns, so that no two finished products look alike. In the old days the lacquers were home made by each craftsman, using his own secret recipe. But in modern times they are more often bought at the local crafts shop.
