Around the great city of "Maha Nuwara", (Kandy) and throughout the hill country there are many small cities and villages, some of them specializing in various exotic crafts. In the Matale area, about 15 miles north of Kandy there are small villages, perhaps with less than 50 homes in each, that produce some of the finest art objects in the country. Their home made jewelry, silverware, brass ware, and lacquered products, like ornamental ash trays, walking sticks, and handles for various implements can be found in many of the better quality shops in most of the major cities.
