Hill Country - Rice Fields
Photo and Text by Siri
Throughout much of the world rice is harvested by hand, using knives or sickles. All sorts of means are used to thresh the grain, ranging from using the weight of animals or tractors to threshing with various types of machines.
During the past quarter-century, rice breeding programs have been initiated to improve resistance to diseases and insects. As a part of these programs several high-yielding dwarf plants that can withstand water depths, and good response to fertilizers have also been developed. New varieties can, under good cultural conditions such as soil fertility and water control, increase yields as much as 100% compared with conventional varieties.
