CONSTITUTION
(Inaugurated Nov 21, 1982, AMENDED APRIL 8, 2000)
Description: The Sri Lanka Vegetarian Society is a non-profit-making, non-sectarian voluntary organisation whose aim is to promote vegetarianism as a healthy, non-violent, eco-friendly way of life, in tune with the best religious and spiritual values of mankind. It also seeks to improve the facilities available for vegetarians in Sri Lanka.
Membership:
(a) Vegetarians above the age of 12 years are eligible for ordinary and life membership. Non-vegetarians who intend to become vegetarians may obtain associate membership. All categories of members will pledge to uphold the right to life of all living beings and to abstain from cruelty and violence to them to the greatest extent possible.
(b) Associate members will not be qualified to vote or to be elected to any office in the Society.
(3) Office Bearers:
(a) There will be six office bearers of the Society:
(i) President (ii) Vice President (iii/iv) Two Joint Secretaries (v) Treasurer (vi) Assistant Treasurer
Their functions and duties will be similar to those attached to such offices in other voluntary organisations.
Office bearers will be elected at an Annual General Meeting of the Society. They will hold office until the next Annual General Meeting.
(4) Executive Committee:
(a) There will be an Executive Committee of fourteen consisting of the following: 1-6 : The six elected office bearers, (7-14) eight persons elected from among the rest of the membership of the Society.
(b) With reference to any matter for which the constitution has not made explicit provision, the Executive Committee shall take decisions in keeping with the objectives of the Society. Such decisions shall be presented to the earliest subsequent General Meeting for covering approval.
(5) Attendance at Committee Meetings:
An office bearer/ committee member who absents him-/her-self from three consecutive committee meetings without notification shall be deemed to have voluntarily given up office / committee membership.
Quorum:
(a) General Meetings: Twenty five of those holding ordinary and life membership.
(a) Executive Committee: At least two office bearers and three elected committee members.
(6) Membership Fee:
(a) Ordinary membership: Adults: Rs 30.00 per year, Ordinary membership: Students: Rs 10.00 per year; Associate membership: Rs 20.00 per year; Life membership: Rs 200.00
(b) A person who wishes to join the Society but finds it difficult to pay the membership fee may be exempted from payment by a decision of the Executive Committee.
(7) Audit:
(a) The accounts of the Society will be audited annually by a qualified auditor appointed by the Executive Committee.
(b) The financial year of the Society shall be from April 01 to March 31.
