OTHER ACTIVITIES

Nisansala was the venue for a number of training sessions for the directors of the National Holy Childhood organization.
We have provided three month training courses for the staff now employed in a new community based residential and day service in Thanamalvila.
Training for the family Apostolate Movement.
We have provided training at Nisansala for 32 people from Badulla community services for people with learning disability.
Staff training for Ladani care homes services.
Seminars have been held at Nisansala for animators working in the Katunaike Free Trade Zone-These are mainly girls in the garment industry.
Human Rights Movement Seminars.
Training of School Prefects-values-peace studies.
Conferences for Habitat International.
Non-violent Communication Courses.

SERVICES OUTWITH OUR CORE WORK

Over the past 12 months we have continued to be the contact point of many varied needs:
Medical,Surgical-psychological-social,religious-alcohol rehabilitation and care of the elderly,
helping some un employed,through our network of contacts.

Foreign Professional Input

Over 100 assessments have been carried out in the last 12 months and a further 70 were carried out in october 2000 by Peter Dorai Raj and Seamus Mc.Loone.
Peter Dorai Raj has provided individual counseling,training,assessment,foreign aid for the last 8 years.
Workshops have been provided up & down the Island for people involved in social care, basic Psychology,strees management,behaviour modification etc.

Foreign Volunteers

In the last three years we have been blessed with the support,encouragement and talents of volunteers from Belgium,England and Ireland. These non-paid volunteers have been involved in secretarial work,the building of homes and community centres for the poor,church buildings and tuition in local schools and in an orphanage teaching English and art.

Psychology students have also provided training both for our own Services & other groups around the country.

Further teams of volunteers tradesmen will be coming 2001/2 to build 20 homes for the poor.These Volunteers come from Austia and Ireland.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

Psychological assessment/counseling/training has been provided over the last 8 years
by Psychologists from both Ireland and the U.K.

Approximately 400 children and young people have been assessed.

Medical Help

Support to family for the maintenance of their severely handicapped son	Father,bread winner,burns victim	Homeless reped burns victim

The Future

Like other provinces and districts of Brothers of Charity international,we have given a commitment to projects in developing countries.In the case of our province -we have offered assistance,both professional and financial,to Sri Lanka.Our present aim to have structures in place so that services are secured,staff are adequately trained,resourced and sufficiently self-reliant so that provision countinues.

Our Priorities are:

To ensure that all provision is local,small in scale and community-led.

To involve parents,local communities,staff and statutory authorities in all service departments.

To negotiate financial costs of service provision with statutory agencies,families,staff and charitable foundations.

To develop services,which,once up and running and appropriately funded,could have their management transferred to parents associations or other local community groups.

To provide community-led services is our ultimate goal throughout the areas where we work in partnership with local people.
