2. READERS COLUMN - MICROBIOLOGY ON THE WEB
This months readers column is contributed by Dr. Sirimali Fernando, Head, Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri Jayawardenapura.
There are many interesting microbiology related sites on the net. You can begin your microbiology journy at http://www.micro.msb.le.ac.uk/video/video.html which has some interesting video clips. The on-line information service 'OUTBREAK' (http://www.outbreak.org/cgi-reg/dynaserve.exe/index.html) which gives you info on emerging diseases and epidemics.
Up to date epidemiological information can be obtained from the Weekly Epidemiological report (WER) of WHO (http://www.who.ch/wer/wer_home.htm), Weekly Epidemiological report (MMWR) of CDC atalanta (http://www.cdc.gov/epo/mmwr/mmwr.html), and Epidemiological report of the CDSC, Colindale, UK (http://www.open.gov.uk/cdsc/cdschome.htm)
You can visit the American Society of Microbiology and do a microbiology literature search at http://asmusa.edoc.com/asm-bin/search
Animated learning-teaching resources are fun. Try microbes come alive at (http://www.cellsalive.com/index.htm), visit the zoo of microbes (http://commtechlab.msu.edu/CTLProjects/dlc-me/zoo/), and explore the human immune system with animated models at the VIRTUAL EXPLORER http://sdchemw.ucsd.edu/ve/models.html
Students may take a look at the University of Leicester microbiology course content at http://www.micro.msb.le.ac.uk. and MICRO 200 INDEX at http://otal.umd.edu/~micro200/welcome.html at university of Maryland which has lectures, group assignments and tutorials. The latter site has a lot of useful facts, but is a little boring as it is mainly text based.
***EDITOR'S COMMENTS: We invite
your to send write to this column giving details about interesting sites
with your comments/assessment about them to vajiradx@sri.lanka.net -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. FAQ - HOW DO I CREATE MY OWN WEB SITE ?
Creating webpages is no big deal. They are written using the language called HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language) which is in English of course and is easy to master. There are many sites on the net itself that will teach HTML. For a start try http://junior.apk.net/~jbarta/weblinks/index.html. Well if you are lazy to learn HTML then try NETSCPAE 3.0 GOLD or any other browser which can edit HTML files or Microsoft Word 97 which will do the coding for you.
You can also make your page jazzy by including cool graphics and animations. You can download many of these from the net free of charge. Try http://www.dreamscape.com/frankvad/free.webmaster.html http://www.clever.net/gld/factorys.htm
The secret of a good webpage (I am told !) is in the design. Some design tips are available from a Russian master http://www.webreference.com/ Learn how to manipulate the layout, color, and typography to keep the attention of the viewer. Many interesting examples as well.
Well, if these links are not enough for you to get going try the ccom home page at http://www.ccom.lk for other links or the Web Developer's Links at http://www.best.com/~highland/webdev.html.
When your site is complete find a home for it from the free homepage center http://www.california.com/~sgeler/
Finally if your want to do it online without all the hassel of designing your page and finding a place to host it, then try http://infolanka.com/homepage/
Good Luck......Editors. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
