AMPARA MASSACRE AND THE NGO'S (99 Sep 22)
The LTTE attack killing more than 50 people including two pregnant women and children has been condemned by many people and organisations. Strangely enough the NGO's and the other peace vendors have kept quiet on the matter. The Bishop of Jaffna who issued a statement on the death of 23 people in an air attack was silent on the Ampara massacre.
While the peace beggars were silent some other organisations that pretend to be impartial tried to equate the death of the people by the air attack and the barbarous killings in Ampara by the LTTE. The JVP, Amnesty International and the Catholic Bishop's Conference are three such organisations. They were concerned of the deaths of civilians in the "war". In a sense they have justified the killings by the LTTE.
The simple fact is that there is no war in the country. The LTTE has taken up arms to divide the country and it is the duty of the government to protect the state. The LTTE also uses people as human shield and in any case if civilians were killed during an air attack it cannot be considered as a deliberate attack. On the other hand the LTTE attack in Ampara was deliberate planned and barbarous. If organisations are refusing to make this distinction then their so-called impartiality has to be questioned.
