The Chief Justice Mr. G. P. S. de Silva has retired with effect from 15th September 1999. He refused a ceremonial farewell and the lawyers had to meet him in chambers to wish him well.
The retirement of Mr. de Silva has brought to the attention of the public the appointment of the new chief justice. One of the names that is mentioned in the legal circles is that of Mr. Sarath Silva the present Attorney General.
However, there were various allegations raised by certain newspapers against Mr. Sarath Silva and an unofficial campaign against his appointment. But many people believe that the President Chandrika Kumaratunga who has the power to appoint the chief justice would ignore these newspapers and go ahead with the appointment of Mr. Sarath Silva as the new chief justice.
