PORK STALL OPPOSED (99 Aug 11)

The Muslim members of the Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha were united in opposing a proposal to open a pork stall in the public market in Warakapola. The Muslim members irrespective of their party affiliations opposed the motion.

In the course of the debate the Sinhala members have pointed out that there are three beef stalls in Warakapola for the Muslims and that there are others who eat pork and further that there are only about five thousand Muslims out of about hundred thousand population in the Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha area.

This incident raises a number of questions. The Muslim members of the Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha have already assumed that Sri Lanka is a Muslim country. If the Buddhists were to oppose even the selling of liquor what would be the reaction of the NGO's and the anti Buddhist organisations. They would make a big issue out of it, presenting it as a case of imposition of Buddhist hegemony.
