KARUNA TO DEFECT (99 May 12)
According to the "Divaina" of 6th May problems have arisen between Prabhakaran and his deputy Karuna who is the so-called commander of the Madakalapuwa terrorists.The appointment of Karuna as the deputy has antoganised the followers of Mahattaya the former deputy, who was killed by Prabhakaran's gang on his orders.
Karuna is reported to have backed from the LTTE activities in Vavuniyava. When he was asked by Prabhakaran to lead the LTTE against the army in the regions of Vavuniyava. he has apparently asked why he should come all the way from Madakalapuwa when Prabhakaran is there.
These reports indicate that there is some kind of frustration in the LTTE ranks as they have been made inactive during the last seven months. The operation "Ranagosa III" that was commenced last week is supposed to drive away and defeat the LTTE in the Vanni regions. With all these setbacks the LTTE with the help of the peace vendors are trying to force the government to start negotiations.
