LESS CROWDS AT MAY DAY (99 May 05)
The May day rallies attracted less crowds this year both in Kolomba as well is in the outstations. The PA rally was held in the Town Hall premises in Kolomba while the UNP had its rally in Galle.
One of the reasons given by the organisers for the poor attendance at the May day rally was the long week end. The May day fell on a Saturday following the Poya day on Friday. However it is well known that the activists and the party supporters would not have taken the long week end to go to their villages or on pilgrimages sacrificing the May day rituals.
Probably the May day could not attract large crowds due to the fact that the people are getting tired of these rituals.The people are losing interests not only in part politics but also in activities connected with the political parties.
