SLMC UNHAPPY ABOUT RESULTS (99 Apr 14)

Mr. Rauf Hakeem , the general secretary of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has said that his party would have fared better had they contested the provincial council elections held on the 6th of April as an independent party. To substantiate his claim he has said that in the Kalutara district where the SLMC contested as an independent party they won a seat whereas when their candidates contested on the PA ticket they failed to win.

Mr. Hakeem has also said that in the North Central Province the SLMC, which had four members in the last council, did not win a single seat this time.

It is not clear whether the SLMC could have done better had they contested as an independent party. But what is clear is that the SLMC is having problems with the PA. The SLMC has still not decided to join the UNP, only because the UNP has not shown that they are capable of winning at the next general election.
