PA WINS PC ELECTIONS (99

The People Alliance won all the five provincial council elections held on Tuesday the sixth. However they have
not obtained an absolute majority in the western and sabaragamuwa provinces and they will need the support of the
other political parties to have their chief ministers in those provinces.
The UNP however on a basis of the former constituencies won 35 seats compared with the only seat (Mahiyangana)
they won at the 1994 general elections. The JVP has representation in each of the five provincial councils and
they have polled about 7% of the valid votes.
The most interesting thing about the elections was that no issues were canvassed during the campaign. It was a
case of each party accusing the others for the state of affairs in the country . About 90% of the valid votes were
either for the PA or the UNP and it is quite clear that with all the malpractices, terror, violence and corruption
the people are not interested in a third force at least for the moment.
