IGP TALKS TOUGH (99 Mar 03)
The Inspector General of Police Mr. Lucky Kodituwakku has called a meeting of the senior police officers on Friday the 26th of February and asked them to act firmly at the forthcoming elections to the five provincial councils. He has given instructions to the police officers that the election law should be adhered to and irrespective of the offenders action should be taken against them.
However even on Wednesday the 3rd nothing has happened and the posters of the candidates appear everywhere in the areas where elections will be held on the 1st of April. It is easy to give instructions to the officers but whether they could carry out the instructions is another matter altogether.
People tend to lose confidence in these statements and if a Wayamba is repeated in the other five provinces there is nothing much the police could do to enforce the election law.
