VAYAMBA VIOLENCE INCREASE (99 Jan 13)
Violence connected with the elections to the Vayamba Provincial council has increased. Already a few people have been killed and both the UNP and the PA complain of thuggery by the other side. The elections to the provincial council are scheduled for the twenty fifth.
Many people have seen vehicles without the number plates on the road and more than fifteen such vehicles have been taken to custody. However such vehicles continue to be seen on the roads reminding the people of the 1987-90 days.
It is a sad story that the police is powerless and the commissioner of elections has no authority to postpone elections if he does not think that the conditions are not suitable for holding an election.
