PRESIDENT RETURNS (98 Oct 07)

The President Ms. Chandrika Kumaratunga returned to the island on Monday the 5th from London. She was in London on her way back from New York where she attended the UN sessions.

The leader of the opposition Mr. Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to arrive from the USA on Wednesday the 7th. Both Ms. Kumaratunga and Mr. Wickremesinghe were away when the army lost control of Kilinochchi.

Some UNP members have proposed to bring a vote of no confidence against the government over the Kilinochchi debacle where more than one thousand soldiers lost their lives. However there are others who do not agree with the idea saying "this is not the time".

It is unfortunate that neither the government nor the opposition has the vision to give the correct political leadership when the country is going through the biggest crisis since 1815.They are interested only in slinging mud at each other.
