Moves are afoot by several Tamil political parties in the North to form another Tamil coalition as an alternative to the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) led by Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK) leader R. Sampanthan.

A discussion on the matter was held on Saturday at the Erovil Conference Hall in Jaffna with the participation of representatives of Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP), Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF), Eelam People’s Revolutionary Liberation Front (EPRLF) (Varadhar Wing) and Sri TELO.

Sources said that Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Minister Douglas Devananda who is also the leader of the EPDP, TULF leader V. Anandasangaree, Suku Sridharan of Varadhar-Wing, Sri TELO Party Executive P.Udayarasa, Jaffna Mayor Yogeswari Pathkunarajah, who is also a leader of the EPDP, participated at this meeting. However, they refused to divulge more information on the decisions taken at the meeting. Meanwhile, Udayarasa of Sri TELO confirmed that the meeting had taken place among the EPDP, EPRLF Pathmanabha Group, TULF and the Sri Telo Party.

“The idea is to function like the DMK and ADMK parties in Tamil Nadu to strengthen the political power of Tamils,” he said.
