The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday requested President Mahinda Rajapaksa to intervene and stop the animal sacrifice that is scheduled to be held at the Munneswaram Kali Amman Kovil on Saturday. The JHU Leader the Rev. Omalpe Sobitha Thera in his written request said the Kovil Priests had agreed to stop the animal sacrifice if the President asked them to do so.

“The JHU, Buddhist organisations, animal rights groups and the All Ceylon Hindu Congress have voiced their protest over this act. Because the priests have said they will stop the animal sacrifice if the President requests them to, we ask him to intervene and stop the animal sacrifice from being carried out,” the monk said.

He said the animal sacrifice was scheduled to take place on the day the Kapilawasthu Relics were being brought to the Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Temple situated in the same province.

“The slaughter of animals is an insult to the Kapilawasthu Relics and as such we urge the President to stop this happening at the Munneswaram Kovil.
