Nearly 400 prominent persons attached to the government had deposited money in the Swiss Bank, UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday. Mr. Kiriella who was speaking during the debate on increasing the fuel allowance of Bribery Commission officials charged that the government had done nothing to investigate allegations about these people who had deposited their money in that bank.

He said Sri Lanka had failed to fulfil the assurance given to the UN that independent commissions would be set up in accordance with the 17th Amendment to the Constitution.

Mr. Kiriella said the Bribery Commission was also relevant to the 17th Amendment which the government had thrown away.

He said no commission was independent today as they were controlled by the Executive in accordance with the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. The UNP MP therefore questioned as to how the government was going to account for its deeds at the UN Human Rights Council later this year. JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti who also joined in the debate charged that a minister who had failed to account for his assets worth Rs 480 million was moving freely today as the issue was swept under the carpet. Coming up with more disclosures he said 17 cases that were filed against the Public Trustee had been withdrawn without giving valid reasons. The only reason given was that it was not possible to proceed with the cases.
