TNA parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran said the government had not declared elections in the North knowing very well that it would lose.

“The government has announced elections to three councils long before their term of office has been completed. But they are scared of conducting elections to the NPC which has still not been established,” he said. Earlier, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also stressed the importance of holding provincial council elections in the North. At the time the government assured Ms. Clinton that the elections would be held no sooner the results of the census in the Northern Province were announced. The results were announced in March but the government has made no moves to hold elections there.
