Against the backdrop of the killing of two JVP supporters in Katuwana, the political parties yesterday agreed to have a three-hour debate in Parliament next month on the rising crime wave in the country, informed sources said yesterday.

The JVP stressed the need to have this debate as an adjournment motion at the parliamentary business committee meeting yesterday. Initially, the government representatives including Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa opposed the move saying that adjournment motion could not be taken in a piecemeal manner. However, they later agreed to the proposal. Accordingly, it was decided that the debate would take place on July 6.
