Year end Unduvap Poya Bana (Buddhist sermon) was delivered by Venerable Kolonnawe Siri Sumangala Thero at Temple Trees on the 31st of December 2009. President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Madam Shiranthi Rajapaksa and large crowds attended the monthly religious programme. Temple Trees Bana programme on every poya day was introduced by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in April 2004 when he assumed duties as Prime Minister during President Chandrika Kumaratunge's tenure. Ven Sumangala Thero is the Chief Incumbent of the Shri Devuram Viharaya, Pannipitiya and the coordinator of the International Budhumaga Association. Ven Thero contested the last general election and entered the Parliament on JHU ticket. Once he was attacked inside the Parliament by few members of the parliament in the government and admitted to Sri Jayawardena Pura Hospital.
