Kandy has been gripped with the fear of a dengue outbreak following the detection of 63 cases in the month of September.
Kandy Mayor Keshara Senanayake made these alarming revelations to councillors of the Kandy Municipality in order to push them into action and bring the situation under control.
Though 94 cases have been recorded since September 30 this year from August this year till September there had been only 31 cases reported, with one death, that of a Telecommunication employee.
The Mayor also said that a continuous campaign is being worked out where the Health Department of the Council was advising rate payers to take precautions and help to destroy the breeding grounds of the disease carriers.
He provided councillors the breakdown of cases reported in areas suspected to be severely effected by the 'dengue' threat. It is reported, he said that Heerasagala, Deeiyawela, Nagastenna, Bahairawakande, Anniewatte, Asgiriya, Ampitiya, Mawilmada, Mapanawatura and Katugastota are the worst affected areas.
