Candidate in robes not a Catholic Priest, Archbishop

The Catholic Church in Sri Lanka warned yesterday the a pastor contesting the forth coming Parliamentary Elections was not a member of the Catholic Church and said the Catholic church did not approve of him distributing leaflets which state a vote for him is a vote for Jesus.

Archbishop of Colombo Rev Malcolm Ranjith said in a special statement yesterday that the man was contesting the general election under the Jathika Sanwardana Peramuna ticket and had portrayed himself in a garb of a Catholic Priest. Archbishop said this person did not represent the Catholic Church in any way.

The archbishop noted that as rule Catholic bishops, priests and religious officials were forbidden from engaging in active politics and from contesting elections.

The said pastor is contesting from the Colombo District.
