A clean suit, empty pocket Independence

Jan 29 (TM) In the recent past, SL has acquired a knack for being in the news for all the wrong reasons. These days it has been reduced to a laughing stock with elaborate plans being made for a grand Independence Day celebration – 75th notwithstanding – which apparently nobody wants in this bankrupt country. By nobody, we mean the average citizen. Prez’s reasoning for going ahead with the celebration rather than helping to douse the already-raging fire has added fuel to it, more..

A time to honour; a time to reflect; a time to reset

Jan 29 (ST) On the eve of the country’s 75th anniversary of Independence, there are disgruntled voices questioning the need to waste money on celebrating such a landmark event, especially as the country is in the grips of, arguably, its worst economic crisis. Some others, go still further to ask why local govt elec-tions cannot be held because of the lack of funds as the govt trots out, but that same govt is willing to spend on commemorating Freedom from more than 450 years of foreign rule. more..

75 Years – What have they done? It is a paradise misplaced

Jan 29 (CT) Our island was called Lanka in pre-King Vijaya times. Valmiki’s immortal Ramayanaya had King Ravana ruling the land from the city of Lankapura. That was almost four thousand years ago. The Arab traders termed it Jaziratul-Yaqut, island of rubies. Some called it Serendib, some Ceilan, from which the Portuguese picked Ceilao and the European mapmakers coined Ceylon. Many were the names from the many that came. Bar none, everyone agreed & noted in their chronicles more..
