Power without authority

Jul 4 (CT) An election can give political power to the winning political party and its leadership. Thereby, they could claim that their exercise of power is legitimate. From the point of view of formal legitimacy, that claim is justifiable. However, elections cannot create the authority of the state if it has lost that authority. In quite a few Asian countries today, we can see how the power transfer is legitimate but the elected govts cannot exercise their authority in order to fulfill more..

Jul 4 (SO) R. Parameshwari smiles humbly as she walks into the premises of 150A, Vipulasena Mawatha, Colombo 10. Tides post-terror: Towards stability following the Easter Sunday attack

Jul 4 (CT) Life is nasty, brutish and short. The horror of the Easter Sunday attack in Sri Lanka will prove Thomas Hobbes was correct. The child that lost her parents or the parent that lost their child unaware why this disgraceful act of brutality came to their lives. During a visit to Berlin an expert who has studied ISIS rightly said to me, your country was staged. It was not an ISIS directed attack but an influenced attack. If it was staged, who was behind in staging this terror? more..

Gnanasara, Rathana and Asgiriya Chapter Seeds of a national crisis in the making

Jul 4 (DM) Being born a Buddhist, educated at one of the leading Buddhist schools in Colombo and for that matter by one of the greatest erudite scholarly monks at the time, I cannot help but feel very hurtful being witness to the total weaponising of our great and sublime philosophy by those uneducated street thugs who roam about all corners of our land pretending as the exclusive custodians of the teachings. It is indeed a great misfortune befalling our nation; its multiple facets have enveloped more..

A majority of Muslims, who are peace-loving and accommodative, are responding positively to more..

Justifying death penalty by exception

Jul 4 (DN) I read with interest, several articles and statements issued by human rights defenders, civil organisations and some of the countries in the western bloc, on the subject of Death penalty which appears to have disturbed a hornet nest both locally and internationally in the wake of Sri Lanka’s decision to reactivate death penalty. Social media, national elections could be nasty combination

Jul 4 (DM) Sri Lanka has set the precedent. The rest of the world, at least some of them seem to be following through. As social media gained credence as the main interpersonal communication mode of the ordinary person, attention also focused on the means of monitoring and controlling the content. WC 2019: England beat New Zealand

Jul 4 (CI) This was not quite how England had dreamed of making the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1992. Falling away after a fast start with the bat and then defending 305 rather than 355 or more, their method to rumble NZ in Durham was less the hyperactive, we'll-chase-anything way of Eoin Morgan and Trevor Bayliss than that of Australia's table toppers. But after 44 years of hurt dating back to the very first global tournament in 1975, one suspects that Morgan's men more..
