Kenya in turmoil ahead of Sri Lanka clash

Feb 28 (AFP) Kenya face double trouble ahead of their all-important World Cup Group A match against Sri Lanka here on Tuesday, as they counter formidable opponents and differences between players and coach. Speeding jeep escorting IGP’s wife kills motorcyclist

Feb 28 (Island) A speeding police jeep ran over a motorcyclist killing him at Sannasgama, Pelmadulla, on Sunday evening. The jeep had crashed into a roadside shop causing damage and injuries to five persons, including three policemen. The speeding vehicle had been escorting the wife of IGP, Asha and the wives of several senior police officers returning from Kataragama following an official function. more..

Sri Lanka inflation accelerates to 7.8-pct in February

Feb 28 (LBO) Consumer prices in Colombo accelerated to 7.8 percent in the 12-months to February from a year earlier, up from 6.9 percent in January the government's statistics office said. Prices rose 1.2 percent in the month of February alone continuing a trend seen in September. In September prices rose 1.0 percent, in October 1.2 percent, in November 1.1 percent in December 1.1 percent and in January 1.2 percent. more..

Norway tightens financial control over SL projects

Feb 28 (Island) Norway is making an effort to tighten financial controls on Sri Lankan projects implemented through the government and NGOs. A senior embassy spokesman says action to thwart mismanagement of funds and ensure better control of its development funds is high on their agenda. According to the NORAD, the total Norwegian development cooperation with Sri Lanka amounted to approximately NOK 2.5 billion during the period 1997-2009. more..
